Gig Description
The second gig I ever went to and my first time seeing David Bowie. His second night at the NEC on the Sound+Vision tour. It was a family affair - went with my sister and two older brothers (in a Lada saloon). We were parked so far from the actual concert hall that we had to get a shuttle bus to and from the car park and took us ages to find the car afterwards!I snuck a small portable tape recorder into the gig in an attempt to record it. The results are unlistenable but I still have the cassettes! Found a video of the gig online but that's not much better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILkOG8NL3M0.
A much better video is the Tokyo show as broadcast on Japanese TV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50A5q_9Znlc
A great setlist but not Bowie's best tour. In retrospect, the small band arrangements did the songs no favours. Bowie had broken off from Tin Machine to do this tour, and his heart clearly wasn't in it, which is probably why he said it would be the last time he'd do the 'greatest hits' (it wasn't, but that's another story). However, visually it was stunning. Bowie used a huge screen to project a mix of the show as it was happening and archive clips with which he interacted. Watch the Japanese video, you'll get the idea.
